13 Dec Ready for an adventure?
How to know when it’s time for you to move abroad.
Approximately one in ten British people live outside of the UK, with Germany ranked third in the HSBC Expat Explorer Survey 2018 top best places to live and work for expat Britons. The decision to move abroad often isn’t an easy one for many people with family, jobs and other such commitments holding people back from deciding to take the plunge. In spite of these hindrances, moving abroad often provides people with a sense of fulfilment and joy that they were never able to fully realise before they moved.
Although a very personal decision, I have listed five things which could indicate that moving abroad would be the right decision for you.
You crave adventure
There is great joy and adventure to be experienced by setting foot outside of your comfort zone. If you’re wanting to appreciate every minute, discover and try new things, taste, learn, listen and love, then moving abroad might be able to provide you with that.
You’ve been given a new job opportunity
This is the perfect excuse! If you’ve been thinking about moving abroad for a while then that new job opportunity is the biggest and best excuse you’re going to get. It’s also one less thing you don’t have to worry about when you get there.
When you travel away from where you currently live, you’re always hesitant to come back
Ever had an overwhelming sense of sadness when heading back to the airport for your return flight? Has it ever been so strong you’ve thought skipping your flight home? What is it about your current life that you fear coming back to? If you find yourself constantly dreaming of your next holiday, maybe you’re ready for a change of scenery.
You’re keen to master a new language
There is no better way to learn a language than to actually live in a country where it is spoken. If you are wanting to learn German as a complete beginner for example, living in an international city like Berlin is great- while German is the first spoken language, the majority of people are happy to speak to you in English, too. Free apps such as Duolingo can also help you to get started before you go and ensure you know the basics.
The thought of moving abroad doesn’t scare you, it excites you
Thought about leaving your job and moving somewhere far away on multiple occasions? Taking that leap of faith is hard, but if you can’t stop thinking about something, it may be time to start acting on it.
